John W. Rulon was a merchant based in Philadelphia from the late 1820s through the 1860s. He began his career as a storekeeper, then became a merchant and was later a supercargo (an officer who traveled on merchant ships overseeing the cargo). After several years of traveling between Philadelphia and Calcutta as a supercargo and importer-exporter and residing in Calcutta for periods of time, Rulon returned to Philadelphia and was later joined by his sons in the mercantile business as the John W....
